Apr 12 @ 9:30 am – Apr 13 @ 4:00 pm
Jette Clover: Textiles, Paper and Text 12-13 April @ Go Create New England

In this workshop we will work with both paper and fabric and the integration of these two materials. Through a variety of exercises we will explore visual and physical layering and experiment with different collage techniques. The handling of materials – the cutting, tearing, overlapping and arranging bits and pieces into a whole – reinforces the importance of the process. And this spontaneous hands-on way of working helps developing an intuitive feeling for composition.

We will use text as a visual means of communication and work with non-traditional ‘tools’ for writing and mark making.

SOLAR PLATE ETCHING: is a quick, simple and safe alternative to traditional etching. Rather than acids, all that is needed is the UV rays of the sun to etch a plate. Your image is applied onto transparent film, then exposed to the sun for 2.30 min.  A built in photo sensitive emulsion hardens the image in the sun. The plate is then washed in water revealing your image ready for printing on the etching press. Emphasis will be on creating images using elements from the natural world. Existing illustrations from nature on clear film will be used with natural elements such as leaves, flowers, feathers, lace. Many applications of colour rolled onto the plate will result in a stunning portfolio of prints.

Lauran Sundin: Wire Bobbin Lace for Contemporary & Traditional Lace Makers @ Go Create! New England
Sep 28 @ 9:30 am – Sep 30 @ 4:00 pm
Lauran Sundin: Wire Bobbin Lace for Contemporary & Traditional Lace Makers @ Go Create! New England

Although Lauran is a contemporary lace maker and will concentrate primarily on contemporary bobbin lace, the techniques, covered in the class, would benefit the traditional lace maker who wishes to make traditional pieces using wire. These techniques can also be used for larger dimensional sculptural pieces although she will cover small-scale jewellery applications. Lauran will explore two important aspects; focusing on the special methods of working with wire will help the student understand the structural integrity inherent to metal and its potential for dimensional design, emphasis on proper tensioning and the technique of working the wire around the pins, in a systematic manner to achieve precise stitches will be covered in detail. Additional she will cover methods for making all those wire ends “disappear”.

Vicki Taylor: Beginner Lace Making

Come and learn the intricate art of bobbin lace making. Traditionally bobbin lace making was used to decorate fashion for the aristocracy of Europe from the 16th Century, later to become a form of currency worth more than gold.
Nowadays, lace can be made from all sorts of fibres including wire, crazy yarns and paper. Vicki teaches bobbin lace making in a contemporary and accessible way. This workshop will teach you some of the basics and will open your eyes to the possibilities of this intriguing art form.

Liz Powell: Paper and Stitch 9-10th February @ The Studio

This 2 day workshop is all about experimenting with the interaction of paper and stitch. We’ll be including elements and working from the lovely New England environment such as grasses, leaves, found objects, and incorporating stitched elements into a variety of paper manipulations. We will also play with the traditional Korean technique of Joomchi (a type of paper felting best done with the feet and power tools I’ve found) where paper layering and stitch creates new voids and shapes.

You can jump into joomchi with both feet, literally, but I will also be demonstrating and making a piece for everyone so all participants will end up with a piece of joomchi with personal inclusions that you may have brought or collected in the landscape, but if you want to dive in and give it a whirl that will be great! You can bind up a diary of the weekend using an age old binding technique that dates to medieval times using book stitching frames that I will provide. The frames are available for purchase after the workshop if you become addicted.

All joomchi equipment will be provided and all levels of experience catered for.
