21 Sep Jillian Culey: Basketry – twining and cords

Jilian Culey taught us cord making and twining using natural materials such as red hot poker, lomandra, iris and reeds.

Jillian showed us how to incorporate the cords we had made into baskets and bags. This one is a round basket made using a twining method.

Jillian uses a hands-on approach to teaching her workshops. Starting a round basket is not difficult if you know how!

The weather outside was not very pleasant, so we made the most of our warm, sunlit studio. Students could spread out their materials and each student made something unique using different techniques and materials.

Jillian has travelled through Australia and has learnt many different techniques from indigenous Australians. She brought a number of her bags and baskets to demonstrate the possibilities.
