In this workshop participants are shown how to create and design a range of hats for all seasons and occasions. Using traditional millinery techniques participants  start off learning how to measure for a perfect fit and then go on to learn how to draft their own patterns for a variety of styles. The patterns will be used to construct at least two fashionable hats of their choice that not only look great but also fit perfectly.

Participants must have an accomplished level of machine sewing skills.

Description

Student Requirement list:

Paper for drafting patterns minimum 5 sheets

1 metre square foam board (available from art shop) or a thick sheet of cardboard
Square ruler or protractor

Long ruler
Clear plastic ruler, preferably with millimetre marking
Tape measure with hole in end (very important) from good haberdashery shops
Pacer pencil or pencil and sharpener, eraser
Fine felt tip marker pen
Paper scissors,
Drawing pins,
Masking tape
Compass to draw circles with
Sewing machine and equipment (Bobbin, spare needles, etc)
Power board and or extension leads (only if you have them)
Dressmaker’s pins, quick unpick, fabric scissors
2 metres woven iron on interfacing medium weight (armour weft – brand name, available from Spotlight) – available to purchase in class $10 per metre
2 metres of firm interfacing (available to purchase in class $10 per metre.
1 metre fabric in chosen colour, something with a bit of body e.g. cotton, patchwork cotton, drill, furnishing cotton, etc per hat (plan to make to hats)
½ metre of fine cotton fabric (poplin) for lining in matching colour to chosen fabric per hat
Machine thread to match fabric
1 metre of calico
2 metres of ridgeline
Pen, notebook
Ideas, design drawings, pictures of hats
