Learn simple, but exciting ways to colour up fabric in this fun workshop. Over two days Jan will cover a multitude of techniques that can be easily recreated at home, including mono-printing, no rules screen-printing, using transfers, inks and acrylic paints. You will walk away with a stack of unique fabrics ready to be used in any of your textile projects.

Requirements:

COLOUR MY (TEXTILE) WORLD

Students requirement list

-three metres of plain white cotton. Can be new fabric, or old sheets etc., must be white or very pale

-half metre of black cotton

-an artist’s journal is essential because this is a workshop of ideas and if you don’t write things down they will vanish from your head

-15 black or dark green garbage bags

-various foam brushes, spoons and mark making tools such as old credit cards and combs

-bring an assortment of stiff white bristle brushes (the cheap school kind), a stencil brush if you have one, and a house painting brush 7-10 cms wide

-a plastic palette or a few white plastic picnic plates

-hard brayer, soft rollers

-spray bottle for water

-6×250 ml containers such as yoghurt cups for putting paint/dye/water in, and one larger general water container, such as a one litre yoghurt container

-small amount (100ml is plenty) white glue such as Aquadhere

-stamps or objects to stamp with, such as commercial patterned blocks, kitchen utensils, tools, raised wallpaper, tough leaves that have been dried and flattened (fresh works too), commercial laser cut stencils

-the essential old towel or two

-gloves and apron

-dry media such as water soluble pastels, Inktense pencils

OPTIONAL

-more fabric that is an assortment of synthetics or blends, textured or not, in white or pale colours. These can be sheers, voiles or furniture fabrics. Silk is not suitable.

-your own acrylic paints and silk screen textile paste. I will bring basic supplies but using your own media would be an advantage

-any media that you would like to play with. This may be the Inktense pencils you bought and never opened, or the foils that you don’t know what to do with. This is the workshop to experiment with products and techniques that you haven’t had the time for

-screen printing equipment, a small screen and squeegee if transporting this equipment is practical

Materials fee of $15

This is for paints, other media, screens and tools.

I WILL BRING A BIT OF EVERYTHING SO IF YOU DON’T HAVE ANY OF THE ABOVE I WILL HAVE IT TO SHARE.
