Learn how to work with textures and colours, such as hand dyed cotton fabrics, silks, velvet, glitz and lace, yarns and beading.

Description

Learn how to work with many textures and colours, such as hand dyed cotton fabrics, silk, velvet, glitz and lace, yarns and beading. In this class you will learn many ways of texturing and manipulating the various fabrics and then assembling them in a collage method to make a new fabric. Using free motion machining we will make a new embellished fabric that can be used for soft furnishings such as cushions, vests, and for covering books and folders.

The second day will look at more detailed methods of handling layered fabrics and surface embellishment to unify the composition.

If you have any questions please email me.

REQUIREMENTS

We will be using free motion machining so the feed dogs will be lowered and sewing will be done with the darning foot, or other suitable foot. Some experience in free motion machining, or stippling, will be necessary for you to get the most benefit from this class. I am not a machine mechanic so if you have trouble with your machine I won’t be able to fix it.

Darning foot or quilting foot for free motion machine stitching.

Pins (long quilting preferred), sharp scissors and usual sewing equipment.

A selection of fabrics in a group or family of colours that you like eg. blue/green/purple or yellow/orange or autumn tones. Hand dyed, or prints similar to these, are good to use.

Also bring silks and synthetics, the more variety the better. Scraps of glitz, laces, nets and sheers that you love. I will have some glitz scraps to use if you don’t have anything like this.

Scraps are good, nothing needs to be more than fat quarter size (50 x 55 cms), or can be as small as hand size. Two or three fat quarters to use as backing fabric will be plenty.

Bring iron-on or plain vylene, thin pellon or a canvas to use as a stabiliser. We will make a number of samples so bring about a metre. Quilt wadding such as Warm & Natural can also be used, 1/2 metre or a few fat quarter pieces.

Sewing machine cleaned and oiled with a new needle and spare needles.
