Jan Clark: Takeaway Dye Day 17th Feb 2018

$130.00

The idea of the workshop is to have fun and build a stash of hand dyed fat quarters. I am not going to do colour theory or dye recipes. Dyes and chemicals will be supplied and all you do is splash around and make unrepeatable happy accidents. We will scrunch dye and fill the containers in the Parfait Method and everyone can take their containers home and then wash them out.

Using thickened dye and more fat quarters (prepared with soda ash) we will experiment with painting and stamping. Each participant will receive two prepared fat quarters of cotton for this part of the workshop.

7 in stock (can be backordered)

Materials fee: $20

Requirements List:

White 100% cotton, at least 4 metres. This can be various kinds of cotton, such as voile, homespun, bleached calico, pique, damask. Homespun, broadcloth or bleached calico are the most reliable and cheapest. Seeded calico is not suitable.

Rip at least two metres of your cotton into fat quarters and wet down and spin the night before the workshop. If your fabric is just damp it will help the absorption of dye.

Optional: Fat quarters (approx 55x50cms) of other natural white fabrics such as silk, cotton velveteen, rayon.

Extra costs, optional

Additional cotton fat quarters prepared with soda ash for painting and stamping … $2 each.

Additional fat quarters of exotic fabrics such as silk, velvet and textured cottons will be available for various prices.

What to bring:

Wear old clothes or bring a plastic apron.

Gloves

Spray bottle for water

Pegs/clamps for resist clamping

Old towel for wiping your hands

You will have at least 4 sealed take-away containers with the dyed fat quarters so you will need to bring a few plastic shopping bags to transport all the goodies home.

Four black garbage bags. The fat quarters that are painted and stamped will be layered flat on top of each other and will need to be rolled between flat black garbage bags for carrying home.
