In this workshop, particpants will learn twining and cord making, some of the oldest craft techniques known. The versatile random weaving method can be used to make a variety of forms ranging from small delicate vessels to bigger baskets. We will use various materials including vines, branches and leafy plants, also handmade cord. Plants materials will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring materials from their own surroundings.

Requirements List:

  • Scissors
  • Small sharp knife/Stanley knife
  • bobkins or large knitting needles size 8-10
  • items that can be incorporated into your woven project for colour eg. colourful fabrics, strips of material, cables, rolls of plastic twines
  • small pliers
  • secateurs
  • large bucket to soak materials in
  • old towel to wrap materials in
  • clothes pegs
  • From your garden or elsewhere: wisteria vines, non-thorny rose branches, willow branches, silver birch branches, any long skinny sticks, kangaroo grass, long tussock grasses, red hot poker leaves, New Zealand flax leaves, long iris leaves etc (pick green sticks/grasses at least 10-14 days prior to the workshop to make sure they are dry and ready to weave with. Leave them somewhere dry, on top of newspapers to soak up moisture – not in plastic bags as they will sweat and rot)
  • an apron
  • notebook and pen

Materials Fee: $20pp payable in class. This will cover materials used in class. Extra materials can be purchased for $20/bag mixed dyed raffia. A starter kit can be purchased for $30 which includes a bag of natural raffia, 2 nickel plated big eye needles, some beads, a pair of sharp shears and a little woven pin cushion hand made by Lanny.
